This was a super easy project that literally took like 15 minutes from start to finish. In my opinion it adds more character and curb appeal to the house.
As we were shopping in Home Depot for a new furnace filter we ran across this awesome product. I always wanted Carriage Style garage doors but it wasn't an option with the program we built with. I always thought it would be a down-the-road upgrade we would have to save our pennies for. Little did I know it was an easy project that would only take a few minutes and a few dollars!
This hardware kit was on sale at The Home Depot for only $6.99. Seriously?! It costs about the same as a combo meal at a fast food restaurant. Definitely affordable. How could we pass it up?
Step One:
Place and measure where you want to situate the brackets, making sure they line up on both sides and are level.
Step Two:
Drill the screws in the brackets in the designated holes.
Step Three:
Figure out where you want your handles situated. There are a few different options, whether you want them closer together or farther apart. Make sure they are level, then mark where you need to pre-drill the holes.
Step Four:
Pre-drill where you marked the holes, put on the handles, then insert the bolts.
Step Five:
Put the bracket in the bolts on the inside of the garage door, then tighten the nut around the bolt.
That's it!
I think it made a pretty big difference.

Oh my goodness! I stumbled upon your blog through Pinterest. Love this idea! Where did you find the kit in Home Depot? I am hoping to save myself hours of endlessly wandering. :)
ReplyDeleteOh, wow! Genius. Love it! Thanks for sharing this!
ReplyDeleteI found the kit in the garage doors section which was around all the doors for sale there. I'm so glad you like this idea! I smile now every time I pull into my driveway :)
ReplyDeleteLOVE this! Such a simple way to upgrade--I had no idea this even existed!
ReplyDeleteFound you on Pinterest--Loving your blog so far!
xoxo, Jessi
Found you on Pinterest! This is amazing! Nice job :)
ReplyDeletealso saw this on pinterest, just wanted to let you know if looks fabulous! :)
ReplyDeleteWhen buying a garage door you have a number of options to choose from. Which one you select will depend greatly on what size of garage and driveway you have along with how much you want to spend.

Yes but how do you put the windows in? LOL.
ReplyDeletenygatesus- I built my home with a low to moderate income program, so I only had the option of a long or short panel garage door to keep costs low and the home affordable. If I were to hire a contractor I'm sure that I would have much more options.
ReplyDeletePolly & Matt McDonald- I wish I knew! Windows would most definitely finish off the look I'm going for.
It looks great. I'm particularly impressed of the designs. It fits to the garage door.

ReplyDeleteThanks!!

For the windows, do what I did---on each of the panels of the top row, measure out the center of each panel, taking into account the width of your painters' tape. (If panel is 18" wide and you are using 1" tape, then 18-1=17" half of 17" is 8.5 inches, so measure over 8.5" from edge of panel and place your tape vertically.) Tape all of the other edges of each panel, then paint your "new" panel blocks black. Let dry, and voila! "Windows" for your garage door. You can look up "Nate Berkus faux garage door windows" online and see how great they look. Also, to prevent paint bleed-thru, paint over the edges of your painters tape with the original color of your door, your case, white (just paint where you are going to paint black, not over every single edge of tape). After the white paint dries, paint your "windows" on--the edges of the tape will be sealed by the white paint and the white paint (which matches your garage door) will be the paint that bled under the tape edge.
ReplyDeleteWonderful!!! I love it!
ReplyDeleteReally your Garage Doors looking great after this addition. I will too try this on my garage doors. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteSo going to reblog this and credit you if you don't mind on my real estate blog! And so doing this to my garage door too!
ReplyDeleteafter reading your post, I purchased the kit for hubby for xmas.....of course, I did not get such a good deal. It was 19.99 at our Home Depot...still thought it was worth the price. Now let's see how it turns out. thanks for the idea.
ReplyDeleteYou can buy the decorative windows from Home Depot as well. They are $100 online for a box of two.
ReplyDeleteI was telling my hubs that I wanted to do this last summer! What I didn't know was that these came in kits! Thank you for letting us all know, it looks great!
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly what we have been looking for- we've talked about dressing up our garage doors forever! Thank you- looks great! :) ~Joy (Yesterfood)
ReplyDeleteI am SO gonna do this!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I'm going to do this to our garage doors!
ReplyDeleteWE know the "doors" are fake. Do you think painting a 1" verticle line down the center, between the handles, make it look more real?

Aside from being cheap and very effective in improving how the garage doors look, this idea is actually very easy to execute. All you need, aside from the parts that come from the package, is an electric drill, a meter, and a level.

I love this idea and you'll never believe what I found - on Amazon.com the have the "faux windows" to create the look we're all going for - that beautiful carriage style! It's a bit pricey but from the reviews, it's a good, American made product!

I'm definitely getting the hardware at Home Depot tomorrow and I'll think on the plexiglass windows for a while... I'd need 2 sets for my double garage door.
Great post!
I am using a mirror spray paint for my windows. It will give a more believable affect from the road until you walk up to it.
ReplyDeleteDd your home depot have them on clearance ? I purchased mine at $39.99
ReplyDeleteI can’t believe that a simple decoration or hardware can create a beautiful enhancement to your garage door. In just a quick installment, you now have an elegant and stylish front garage. I love it! I would definitely persuade my father to try this on his garage door!

DeleteLove this!!! Found you from Hi Sugarplum!
ReplyDeletethis is so cute! Love it, doing it on ours too soon! Thanks for sharing!~ Saw this btw at Hi SUGARPLUM
ReplyDeleteFound you from Hi Sugarplum! - question: do the handles interfere with your garage door opening (do they scrape the top of your garage door opening? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI was concerned with that a little at first too, but they did not interfere at all with the way the garage door opened. There was more than enough clearance. Hope that helps!

Some advice please from the commentors. My garage door has windows in it. Would this look silly? Should I or shouldnt I. because I do badly want too! Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI would go for it! Carriage style garage doors traditionally have windows anyway, so I think it would look great!

Hi Sarah! Found you through Hi Sugarplum! What a great idea! I am going to HD today to look for this! Newest follower! :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome, glad you found me!
DeleteWhat a great idea. I have to show this to the man of the house for his thoughts. I did have to chuckle at the photo of your husband in front of the garage door working. See, I thought my husband was the only man who ended up with major baggy pants in the middle of home improvement projects. I guess not.
ReplyDeleteI like to tease him that he is reverting back to his teenage baggy pants days! haha. His problem is that his "working" Dickies pants were his brothers originally who is a couple sizes bigger. I just have to remind him to wear his belt when he wears them. lol

ReplyDeleteSuch a great tip! We looked at a house to buy and it was outdated. We thought it would take way to much to update but this is perfect! Thank you!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great idea! I had no idea those parts were so inexpensive. I can't wait to get to Home Depot! Thanks for the tip.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much for posting this!! I had no idea this kit existed. We just installed it today and painted our light black. So many compliments and it has only been a few hours. Thank you!
